Aeropuertos

I barely remember anything about the theory of the ‘non-places’, but I love the idea of not being anyone in this precise moment. Or being something that is going to become something else.

‘What are you?’. I always struggle to answer that question. I am still trying to figure that out. I suppose, since I cannot come up with a word that defines what I do, I am everything that I have seen and every experience I have lived. I am the best chocolate-filled croissant in a train from Austria to Hungary; a snowy bridge that separates Buda from Pest or the Danube covered on fog. I am the grey of Warsaw, the smell of my house in Nijmegen. I am the most surrealist experience with AirBnb in Cologne; ‘Ass Back Home’ on loop in London when we were still illegal teenagers; a group of deer at Phoenix Park; a night back home trying to catch Perseids. I am a rainy Edinburgh behind a yellow blanket/improvised curtain when I am still in bed. I am a giant scone next to a huge window facing Glencoe; a sky-lantern floating nowhere in McCaig’s Tower at 2am. A sunset in a tiny beach and a train journey from Oban, at night, with Alex Turner singing ‘Glass in the Park’ to me. So far.

Edimburgo en 45 instantes

Fotorreportaje: Edimburgo (Escocia), 2015 / 2016

Photoessay: Edinburgh (Scotland), 2015 / 2016
The 45 pictures have been taken during the period I have been living in Edinburgh.

“One always returns to the old places where one loved life.” And we belong to the place our heart pushes our body into without any possible physical resistance. We cannot fight the natural forces that make us love something/someone. All we have to do is to go with the flow and not even ask ourselves why we feel what we feel. As all those who have a bit of knowledge about me know, I am irrevocably in love with Scotland. And I do feel this place is where I need to be now.

This is not the first gallery (neither the last one) about this marvelous part of the globe, but it is the first one about Edinburgh in depth. This is not my first time here but it is as a resident and not as a visitor anymore. Indeed, even when I still cannot believe this is true, I have been living in Edinburgh for 117 days. Already. And it is snowing today.

Everyone you meet on the way adds something, even if tiny, to your own life. Thank you all those who have come and gone or those who have come and stayed, for making me richer.

Since I’ve assumed I’ll have to spend the whole Summer in Madrid, I’ve decided to stay focused in the pros and enjoy everything this city has to offer. Madrid and I have made peace. The city has so much to offer and I feel there is a lack of hours in a day to do everything I want to do and a lack of days in a year to go to every place I want to go. After having created a list named “Places you must go (in Madrid)” without having ever gone to any of them, I finally got to cross out the first one. Now I’m considering creating another list named “Places you must return to (in Madrid)”. I’m going to tell you about this thing I’ve been talking for over the past few weeks.

The place is called MÜR Café. A place where everything, from the croissants to the jams and chocolate creams, is handmade; where cakes look delicious and they do even more served with a gin tonic. How did I get to know about this place? I found it through the picture of a giant serrano’s bagel. Instagram is a marvelous tool for ‘food hunting’. The cafeteria is placed in Plaza Cristino Martos, 2. Two steps from Plaza de España and practically in front of the well known Sala Marco Aldani. Once located, I have to admit we didn’t know what we were going to find. All I had in mind was the bagel and the pretty breakfast they offer according to the pictures I had seen before. The reality was not different, yet was better.

What we first found was its terrace. Pretty but not the most remarkable thing. Not after having seen the interior of the place. What we found next was a super kind waiter who led us to the upper flat of the establishment and provided us with the menu. After having a look to the upper room, we took a seat in a little vintage style table in front of a large window with great views to the park I’m sure it was waiting for us.

We opened the menu and the word ‘brunch’ jumped into view waving on neon lights. That was more or less how it looked like. We let the waiter recommend us and let things flow. I’m also going to let this flow and make the experience visual because words are just words if they are not proven.

Nowadays, quality is more valued. Current demand requires a product to be natural, delicious and, besides, if it has to be consumed outside home, it has to be consumed in a particularly pretty environment. MÜR Café combines perfectly these three requirements.

Madrid en 55 cotidianidades

Fotorreportaje: Madrid, 2014

The 55 pictures have been taken during 2014 in Madrid.

The key is to base oneself’s happiness in the most mundane things. The daily activities are the engine to everyday life. Low expectations generate a greater enjoyment of the small things. The only thing I hope is for this year to be full of memorable cups of coffee and spontaneous plans.

Viajar como forma de vida

Domestic life, it never suited you like a suitcase.

Dead Sea – The Lumineers

Life is completely unpredictable. You can never say never. However, we all say ‘never’ quite much. I said ‘always’ in this case. I stated once “I’ll always live in Madrid”. I had never thought there could be life outside and that travelling could make me happier. At this point, I don’t know how, my unexperienced mind changed. Any vicarious experience was left behind and I became one of those citizens of the world. I cannot see myself without a suitcase now and I feel like I belong nowhere (and everywhere at the same time). With each step out from this country my mind opens, my horizons spread and my way of thinking is changing. This is how I ended up in the Highlands with no plans but looking forward to new experiences. What I brought up with me was even better. I had not left yet and I could not wait to go back. I had fallen in love with Scotland.

Nowadays, I love to be that one to whom close people say: “where are you now?” or “are you in Madrid? Thought you were away”. As my mum says, my car goes to the airport automatically.

I know there is a lot more for me to know. I no longer think I’m going to live in Madrid but in Scotland. And tomorrow it will be probably another place. Who knows? The funny thing is to look back and realize how mistaken you were regarding the past, because the present is even better or the best is yet to come. Who knows where am I going to be tomorrow?

Notice: this post is not for people who never have breakfast.

I’m one of this kind of people: the way to my heart is through my stomach and Ikea is reaching a part of it so rapidly. I don’t know if there is more people in the world who go to Ikea just to walk around without the necessity of purchasing, like my friends and I. We don’t buy anything but candles if that’s the case. Who wants furnitures when living in mum’s place? If this leisure proposal is surprising for someone, I’ll assure spending the morning in such place is quite funny.

Ikea promotes itself sooo well but, what’s better than the catalog you receive every September at home like if it was a tradition? Their breakfasts. I didn’t know being member of Ikea Family could have marvelous advantages. It turns out that if you go before 12:00 pm, you can enjoy a big breakfast like the one in the first picture for just 3,50€. It’s not the cheapest thing you can find in Madrid but I haven’t said what’s the best thing yet. Having the magic card (Ikea Family), you buy the breakfast and you receive the same amount of money in the form of a discount card you can use later in your purchase (a card you can keep during a few months without losing its value). Summarizing, I’ve spent 3,50€ in such a breakfast, a mug and some cute and little wall lights (maybe a couple of euros more but my tiny obsession with mugs exceeded the 3,50€). Ikea knows how to make you buy and you barely realize about it. But I love it.
